Myopia Control Spectacle Lenses: A New Treatment Option for Children and Young Adults
In an earlier article on this website, I discussed the various progresses happening around the world with regards to myopia control. I mentioned that everything on it was either in its infancy stages or those options were not so common in our market with regards to the availability or our clinical circles are not exposed enough to have a better clarity on it to dispense those.
However, things have changed a bit since then. Myopia control spectacle lenses are now starting to get available, approved and gaining acceptance among optometrists/ophthalmologists in most regions, including the Middle East.
Here are some of the myopia control spectacle lenses that are available:
- Zeiss MyoVision: This lens uses a technology called DNEye® Inside to create a defocus signal in the peripheral retina. DNEye® Inside is a patented technology that maps the unique shape of your eye, and it uses this information to create lenses that are specifically designed for your eyes.
- Zeiss MyoKids: This lens is specifically designed for children between the ages of 6 and 12. It has a unique design that helps to slow the progression of myopia while also providing clear vision for both near and far distances.
- Essilor Stellest lens: This lens uses a technology called H.A.L.T. (Highly Aspherical Lenslet Target) to create a defocus signal in the peripheral retina.
- Hoya MiYOSMART : This is another popular myopia control spectacle lens. This lens uses a technology called D.O.T. (Defocus-Optimized Softlens Technology) to create a defocus signal in the peripheral retina.Studies have shown that myopia control spectacle lenses can be effective in slowing the progression of myopia. For example, a study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology found that Essilor Stellest lenses were able to slow myopia progression by an average of 63%. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that Zeiss MyoVision lenses were able to slow myopia progression by an average of 56%.If you are concerned about your child’s myopia, talk to your optometrist about myopia control spectacle lenses. These lenses can be a safe and effective way to slow the progression of myopia and help to prevent vision loss.
Here are some other things you may want to know about myopia control spectacle lenses:
- Myopia control spectacle lenses are not a cure for myopia. They can only slow the progression of myopia, and they will not improve vision that has already been lost due to myopia.
- Myopia control spectacle lenses will slow the progression of myopia in kids, but they won’t be able to arrest the natural growth of their eyeball and the subsequent corresponding progression of Myopia because of that natural change in the axial length of the eye.
- Myopia control spectacle lenses can be expensive. However, there are somegovernment programs and insurance plans that may cover the cost of these lenses.
- Myopia control spectacle lenses may not be effective for everyone. If you have a severe case of myopia, these lenses may not be able to slow the progression of your myopia asmuch as they would for someone with a milder case.
I hope this information has been helpful. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Additionally, here are some tips for choosing myopia control spectacle lenses:
- Talk to your optometrist about the different types of lenses available and which ones would be best for your child.
- Consider your child’s lifestyle and activities when choosing lenses. For example, if your child is active in sports, you may want to choose lenses that are durable and can withstand impact.
- Make sure the lenses are comfortable for your child to wear. They should not be too heavy or too tight.
- Be prepared to pay a bit more for myopia control spectacle lenses than for regular lenses. However, the investment may be worth it to help slow the progression of your child’s myopia.
